SUMMARY:Exhibit: Dail Dixon - Modern at Scale
DESCRIPTION:Dail Dixon\, Chairs for Various Moods from the series Chairs for Marilyn\, 1999\, oak\, poplar\, and nails. On loan from William Blankinship. Photo: Artie Dixon \nDail Dixon\, FAIA\, is an architect\, craftsman\, and a modernist at heart. This installation\, featuring works from his woodworking studio\, explores how this celebrated North Carolina architect\, known for his innovative design sensibilities\, translates modernist principles into playful\, functional artworks. Dixon’s birdhouses—originally developed to benefit the Penland School of Craft—are more than whimsical objects; they reflect a refined mastery of proportion\, material\, and form. Drawing inspiration from the iconic Case Study Houses and a family history of birdhouse design\, Dixon’s work bridges architecture and craft\, modernity and tradition. \nThis exhibition also includes Dixon’s chair designs\, lovingly crafted each year for his late sister\, and his speculative patent models that blend humor with inventive problem-solving. Together\, these pieces highlight Dixon’s enduring commitment to creating objects that are as thoughtful as they are delightful\, embodying his belief in design’s power to enhance our everyday lives. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nModern at Scale offers a glimpse into Dixon’s creative practice. While many of the structures he has designed throughout his architectural career often remain unseen—private residences that are not accessible to the general public—the sculptural and speculative objects seen here provide viewers an opportunity to appreciate the breadth of his design thinking and the fluid boundaries between art\, architecture\, and craft. \nWebsite

SUMMARY:Exhibit: Anna Buckner: And other Myths
DESCRIPTION:Anna Buckner\, Small Frogs\, 2024\, found fabric on stretcher (24 x 24in.) \nAnna Buckner is a painter in the most expanded sense. An interdisciplinary artist and maker\, she creates compositions at the intersection of textile patterning\, graphic design\, and painting. And other Myths is a body of work that leverages the storytelling potential of quilting within the context of painterly composition and design precision. The works defy easy categorization\, blending the enticing textures and nostalgic palettes of found fabric with the elevated presentation of a stretched canvas. These images are deeply personal yet universally resonant in their spare iconography. \nAnd other Myths speaks to the all-too-human impulse to self-mythologize. To mythologize is to place something—objects\, narratives\, or even ourselves—within the stratosphere of the gods\, a universal framework to make sense of the challenging and unknown. We tell ourselves stories about our actions and their motivations in an effort to understand our choices and\, hopefully\, make wiser ones in the future. Buckner self-mythologizes in these quilt paintings to navigate the complexities of new motherhood\, finding meaning in the both joyful and overwhelming experience of new life and parenthood. Her studio practice is marked by a self-conscious interrogation of the prevailing systems of logic in painting\, language\, fiber\, and education. In this body of work\, she turns that perceptive eye around and onto herself. \nWebsite
