DESCRIPTION:Anna Buckner\, Small Frogs\, 2024\, found fabric on stretcher (24 x 24in.) \nAnna Buckner is a painter in the most expanded sense. An interdisciplinary artist and maker\, she creates compositions at the intersection of textile patterning\, graphic design\, and painting. And other Myths is a body of work that leverages the storytelling potential of quilting within the context of painterly composition and design precision. The works defy easy categorization\, blending the enticing textures and nostalgic palettes of found fabric with the elevated presentation of a stretched canvas. These images are deeply personal yet universally resonant in their spare iconography. \nAnd other Myths speaks to the all-too-human impulse to self-mythologize. To mythologize is to place something—objects\, narratives\, or even ourselves—within the stratosphere of the gods\, a universal framework to make sense of the challenging and unknown. We tell ourselves stories about our actions and their motivations in an effort to understand our choices and\, hopefully\, make wiser ones in the future. Buckner self-mythologizes in these quilt paintings to navigate the complexities of new motherhood\, finding meaning in the both joyful and overwhelming experience of new life and parenthood. Her studio practice is marked by a self-conscious interrogation of the prevailing systems of logic in painting\, language\, fiber\, and education. Beer will be available for purchase. Saturday’s activities start at noon and go all day with the final concert ending around 8 pm. DESCRIPTION:The Mile of Flowers private garden tour is a much beloved Blowing Rock event. It will be held Friday\, June 27\, from 9am-3pm rain or shine! It is a walking tour around town where your group of 10 will be led by a “Garden Guide” who takes you to private gardens and gives you a short history of the area. \nThe tour includes many different types of gardens and covers around a mile. Wear comfortable shoes! A few golf carts will be helping move around people who need rides. \nFrom 1-3pm is a Tea Party hosted at the American Legion building. Come relax and enjoy the view. Reservations can be made in advance. The ticket price is $35 per person and groups of 10 or more get a price of $30 per person. Checks must be made out to the Blowing Rock Garden Club or cash is accepted as well. Reservations are made when payment is received. \nThis event is limited to 200 people. DESCRIPTION:“Music on the Lawn” at The Inn at Ragged Gardens has become a much beloved outdoor concert series. Held each Friday from May through September (weather permitting)\, the event draws locals and visitors alike. It has grown in popularity over the years and attendance in the hundreds can be expected. A different band is featured every week and performances are from 5:30 until 8:30. A cash bar and lawn menu are available. \nThere is no charge for the concerts and guests are encouraged to bring a lawn chair and arrive early to secure a spot on the lawn. DESCRIPTION:The nationally recognized Rosen Sculpture Competition and Exhibition has showcased contemporary American sculpture in outdoor settings across the university campus for the last 39 years. Join juror Joseph Bigley as he leads the outdoor tour of the 10 sculptures he selected as finalists for this year’s competition. Bigley is the Executive Director of the Western North Carolina Sculpture Center and professor of art at Appalachian State University; he shows his sculpture internationally. The walking tour will culminate at the Schaefer Center with an awards reception and complimentary boxed lunch. \nParticipants will gather outdoors\, at the reception tent adjacent to the Schaefer Center.
