The views from Rough Ridge on the Blue Ridge Parkway were amazing today! The trail was busy with people hoping to enjoy the sunset with peak color, and I think it’s safe to say that none of them were disappointed. The trail that leads from Rough Ridge Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway is part of the Tanawha Trail, which happens to be a rather long one at 13 miles. However, accessing the trail at this overlook offers a shorter alternative. It’s a popular hike, as it’s only about 15 minutes of uphill hiking to get to a breathtaking view, with a boardwalk along the ridge that makes for easy viewing of the surrounding area.

The overlook is located at milepost 302.8 (that’s almost nine miles from Blowing Rock), and the elevation at the parking area is 4293 feet. The boardwalk is certainly at least a couple hundred feet higher. Elevations around 4000 feet are showing peak color now, and local experts are predicting that this week and weekend will be the best time to see peak color around Blowing Rock and Boone. gorgeous fall color on the blue ridge parkway

As can be seen in some of the photos, there is still a lot of green foliage along the ridges in the view. Autumn color will make its way to those areas in the coming days, perhaps accelerated by the chilly, sunny days ahead.
