Elk Knob State Park is located in the northern part of Watauga County, close to the Tennessee state line. The area is largely rural and undeveloped, which means beautiful scenery and views. Elk Knob is the third tallest mountain in the county, after Grandfather Mountain and Snake Mountain, with an elevation of 5,540 feet above sea level. Snake Mountain is the neighboring peak. While the best color on the peaks of these ridges was likely to be found last week, the color in the lower picnic and hiking areas of Elk Knob Park are stunning right now. Beech and maple forests have lit up with brilliant hues of yellow, orange, and bronze.
