SUMMARY:How Scientists are Using Genetics to Protect Ramps
DESCRIPTION:Ramps (Allium tricoccum Aiton)\, or wild leeks\, are perennial herbaceous plants native to the forests of eastern North America and valued for their distinctive flavor and cultural significance. Despite increasing harvest pressure\, relatively little is known about their genetic diversity or\ntaxonomic boundaries. While ramps reproduce both clonally through bulb division and sexually through seed production\, the extent to which these modes shape population diversity remains unclear. Additional uncertainty surrounds species delineation within the group\, with as many as four taxa historically proposed. \nDr. Estep’s research provides the first preliminary genetic evidence supporting the recognition of a second ramp taxon—narrow-leaf ramps. His colleagues are expanding their surveys to verify other Ramp species. Together\, this work establishes foundational genetic tools for\nunderstanding ramp taxonomy and informs conservation strategies for this increasingly exploited forest species. \nWebsite

SUMMARY:Yoggs Choreograph Pilgrimage
DESCRIPTION:This event was postponed from the Winterfest weekend. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is event is free and open to the public. Performances will be 20 – 25 minutes long and will take place at 2 & 3 pm. The choreography is designed so that the public can move through the exhibition while the performance is taking place.  \n“To make it visible and tangible\, we need light and material\, any material. And any material can take on the burden of what had been brewing in our consciousness or subconsciousness\, in our awareness or in our dreams.” Anni Albers. \nInspired by the Patrick Dougherty exhibit and the weavings of Anni Albers\, Taryn Griggs and Chris Yon (the Yoggs) will present a new work for six dancers at the Blowing Rock Art and History Museum during the Blowing Rock Winter Festival. The Yoggs are galvanized by Albers and Dougherty’s use of a simple element\, for Albers the thread\, for Dougherty the sapling\, to make intricate works that invite the audience to engage\, interact and dream of possibilities. In response the Yoggs  will use simple everyday movements like walking\, running and skipping to create a physical tapestry. \nWebsite

SUMMARY:Called to Response: Thomas McLamb Explores Patrick Dougherty: A Pilgrimage
DESCRIPTION:Thomas McLamb is an experimental guitarist with a background in punk\, hardcore\, noise\, and ambient sound design. His approach to music\, combining both guitars and synthesizers\, is inspired by other experimental guitar players like Derek Bailey\, Jim O’Rourke\, and Thurston Moore as well as avant-garde composers like Roland Kayn\, Morton Subotnick\, and Éliane Radigue. \nMcLamb will perform two pieces responding to Patrick Daugherty’s Pilgrimage. The first piece\, ‘modes of production\,’ responds to the collection of work gloves and uses many different sound sources to create a wall of harmonic sound. The second piece\, ‘canonization’\, responds to Daugherty’s stickwork technique\, looping guitars and synthesizers inspired by Daugherty’s interwoven stick sculptures. \nWebsite

SUMMARY:Mind Into Matter
DESCRIPTION:Ever wonder what makes an artist tick? From where do they get their inspirations? How do their life experiences translate into great works of art? And how do they make art with a message that matters? \nA lively\, humorous and articulate speaker\, artist Eric Serritella shares his journey in “Mind Into Matter\,” a PowerPoint presentation filled with images that bring his story to life. He sheds light on how he expresses himself through his ceramic trompe l’oeil sculptures and explores how both his conscious and subconscious contributed to the development of several bodies of work\, culminating with his signature birch master works and why they matter. Plan to leave with new knowledge\, perspectives and laughs on the inner workings of an artist’s mind. \nWebsite

SUMMARY:Exploring the Horizon Line: Landscape Theory
DESCRIPTION:William Charles Anthony Frerichs (Belgian American\, 1829-1905)\, Grandfather Mountain\, North Carolina\, c. 1860. Oil on canvas\, 22.25 × 34 in. Gift of Welborn & Patty Alexander. BRAHM Permanent Collection\, 2014.1.03. Photo: Josh White \nLandscape is never just scenery. Across American visual culture\, images of land have shaped ideas about identity\, ownership\, belonging\, and power—influencing how Americans understand both place and themselves. In this opening lecture for Horizon Line: 250 Years of American Landscape\, BRAHM curator Ian Gabriel Wilson-Rhodes introduces the exhibition’s central ideas by exploring how representations of our physical surroundings have functioned not only as subjects for artists\, but as a cultural framework through which Americans have imagined history\, nationhood\, and the environment. \nWebsite

SUMMARY:Camp Catawba: The Groovy Camp
DESCRIPTION:Join App State’s Dr. Neva J. Specht for an in-depth look at Camp Catawba. This presentation will highlight founder Vera Lachmann’s vision for the camp\, stories about their adventures\, and the importance of the camp to the attendees as they became adults. \nLachmann escaped Nazi Germany to immigrate to the United States. She was a trained classicist\, taught kindergarten in Germany\, and became an academic in the United States. In the summers\, she turned an old chicken farm into a “groovy summer camp” for young boys. \nLess than a mile from the Cone Estate\, the camp sprung up each summer so young boys could learn about Homer’s Odyssey\, hike in the Blue Ridge Mountains\, and discover music and art. Vera and her partner\, Tui St. George Tucker (the camp’s music director)\, ran the camp from 1944 to 1970. \nWebsite
