Museums build collections for a variety of reasons: preserving artworks and other objects of historical importance for future generations; cataloging, documenting, and researching said objects; and displaying and interpreting the collection for the public through exhibitions, publications, and other educational programs.

Alexander Hallmark (1949–2021) was an artist and longtime resident of Blowing Rock. Deeply embedded in this community, his career in the studio, though developed later in life, produced many of the works of public art that serve as visual anchors throughout this village and the wider High Country.

The Blowing Rock Plein Air Festival is a four-day, open enrollment plein air painting event. It takes place in the beautiful mountainous area surrounding the town of Blowing Rock in western North Carolina, from Tuesday, August 20th, to Saturday, August 24th, 2024.
