Jim McDowell Living History Performance: “Dave: I Am a Slave”

Blowing Rock Art and History Museum 159 Ginny Stevens Lane, Blowing Rock, NC

Join us for a special living history performance by potter, Jim McDowell, artist in residence at the Blowing Rock Art & History Museum. This performance will be a 2-act one-man show where Jim portrays enslaved potter David Drake (c.1800-1870s). Then Jim will share his personal life story growing up in D.C. during the civil rights era, his time in the Army, and life experiences, including how he became a potter. During the performance, Jim will create a face jug onstage, while at the same time instructing a volunteer from the audience who makes one with him. Pinecones & Pages: the Boone Literary Festival

Pinecones & Pages is a literary festival where the books come to life as the characters appear and interact with each author and audience. Books come to life as actors become characters directly from the page and musicians will accompany authors reading. The festival culminates with a literary/musical show in the Daniel Boone Amphitheater starring Nashville hit makers and world class musicians. More info coming soon!

TAC Talk: Joseph Bathanti Reading from his new book of poetry, “Light at The Seam”

Light at the Seam, a new collection from North Carolina poet Joseph Bathanti, is an exploration of mountaintop removal in southern Appalachian coal country. Rooted in social and restorative justice, Light at the Seam contemplates the earth as fundamentally sacramental, a crucible of awe and mystery, able to regenerate itself and its people even as it succumbs to them. More than mere cautionary tale, this is a volume of hope and wonder. The speaker: Joseph Bathanti, former poet laureate of North Carolina (2012–14) and recipient of the North Carolina Award in Literature, is the author of seventeen books. He is the McFarlane Family Distinguished Professor of Interdisciplinary Education at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. TAC Talks: Featuring scholars from around the country, the Thursday Art & Culture lectures are selected to provide supplemental information on current exhibits at the Blowing Rock Art & History Museum, or to highlight the history and heritage of the mountains.

A live plein air painting demonstration by artist Jeremy Sams will shed light on his process in the impressionist technique of painting outdoors. Sams is one of three artists featured in the Plein Air Masters Show at Blowing Rock Frameworks & Gallery, presented June 18-30.  Look for the full series of plein air painting demonstrations- each artist will be painting at Bass Lake during the weeks leading up to the show opening! These demos are open to anyone who would like to attend. Guests are welcome to come and go freely, anytime between 10am and noon. Boonerang Music & Arts Festival

This family friendly event has free admission. You can expect to find live music from over 14 bands at 4 outdoor stages, an art vendor market with over 60 vendors, 3 locations for beverages, and food, a kid zone, silent disco, and activities for all ages! On Friday, June 17 at 5:30 pm, the Jones House will kick off festivities with their Music on the Lawn series. Beer will be available for purchase. Saturday’s activities start at noon and go all day with the final concert ending around 8 pm. The party can continue from 8:30 pm into the night with a silent disco at the North Depot Street Stage, featuring three different DJ streams. With North Depot Street, South Depot Street, and part of Howard Street being closed for the festival, you’ll be able to freely walk around to the stages, food and artist vendors, and other activities with ease! The hope is for this event to be built upon for years to come! We look forward to seeing you at the inaugural Boonerang Music & Arts Festival!
