Pinecones & Pages: the Boone Literary Festival

Pinecones & Pages is a literary festival where the books come to life as the characters appear and interact with each author and audience. Books come to life as actors become characters directly from the page and musicians will accompany authors reading. The festival culminates with a literary/musical show in the Daniel Boone Amphitheater starring Nashville hit makers and world class musicians. More info coming soon!

TAC Talk: Joseph Bathanti Reading from his new book of poetry, “Light at The Seam”

Blowing Rock Art & History Museum 159 Ginny Stevens Lane, Blowing Rock, NC, United States

Light at the Seam, a new collection from North Carolina poet Joseph Bathanti, is an exploration of mountaintop removal in southern Appalachian coal country. Rooted in social and restorative justice, Light at the Seam contemplates the earth as fundamentally sacramental, a crucible of awe and mystery, able to regenerate itself and its people even as it succumbs to them. More than mere cautionary tale, this is a volume of hope and wonder. The speaker: Joseph Bathanti, former poet laureate of North Carolina (2012–14) and recipient of the North Carolina Award in Literature, is the author of seventeen books. He is the McFarlane Family Distinguished Professor of Interdisciplinary Education at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. TAC Talks: Featuring scholars from around the country, the Thursday Art & Culture lectures are selected to provide supplemental information on current exhibits at the Blowing Rock Art & History Museum, or to highlight the history and heritage of the mountains.

I DRAW SLOW: At The Appalachian Theatre

Appalachian Theatre of the High Country 559 West King Street, Boone, NC, United States

Touring the United States from Dublin, Ireland, the popular quintet “I Draw Slow” makes their debut performance at the Appalachian Theatre of the High Country at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 3 with energy that is “truly infectious.” The band is fronted by siblings Dave (guitar) and Louise (vocals) Holden who have been writing together for two decades. In 2008 the pair teamed up with violinist Adrian Hart, clawhammer banjo player Colin Derham, and double bassist Konrad Liddy to form I Draw Slow. Music critic Martin Anderson said of  the group, “An absolutely beautiful blend of old-time, Appalachian arrangements behind well-crafted lyrics and melodies. Hard to believe they’re from Ireland, but if you listen carefully… you can pick up on Louise Holden’s subtle lilt.” Tickets are $25. For more information on this event and current COVID policies, or to join the theatre’s eblast list, get tickets, or purchase memberships, please visit the ATHC website at www.apptheatre.org.
