Ramps (Allium tricoccum Aiton), or wild leeks, are perennial herbaceous plants native to the forests of eastern North America and valued for their distinctive flavor and cultural significance. Despite increasing harvest pressure, relatively little is known about their genetic diversity or taxonomic boundaries.
This is event is free and open to the public. Performances will be 20 - 25 minutes long and will take place at 2 & 3 pm. The choreography is designed so that the public can move through the exhibition while the performance is taking place.
Downer will read some of the poems from the anthology, Had I a Dove: Appalachian Poets
on the Helene Flood, as examples of narrative poetry. Stressing the importance of
telling our own stories, Downer will encourage participants to write poetry or prose
using prompts and different poetic techniques.
She edited the anthology, Had I a Dove: Appalachian Poets on the Helene Flood released in September 2025 by Redhawk Publications with all proceeds going to the Community Foundation’s Helene Flood Relief Fund.
