The Last Straw

Welcome to The Last Straw on Main Street. The shop is a Christmas wonderland right now, as it is every year from September through December! The first eight months of each year feature special home interior and garden decor for spring, summer, and autumn.   The Last Straw is a second-generation family business, operating since 1988. The owners, Roger and Julie Robertson and their son, Brock, work closely with their friendly and helpful staff to create a unique shopping experience. The Robertsons raised their family in Blowing Rock as their business grew; their two boys went to Blowing Rock Elementary School, played in Memorial Park, swam in the community pool, and played sports with parks and recreation. They have loved making Blowing Rock their home, and count it as a blessing.   The shop is located inside the historic First Baptist Church building, originally built in 1927, and it’s always beautifully overflowing with blooms, textures, scents, and homey touches. Many shoppers would say that a trip to Blowing Rock isn’t complete without a peek inside The Last Straw to see what’s new! The Robertsons also create custom designs and decor for folks all year long, and the arrangements in the shop are all created in-house. While the shop itself should be on your shopping bucket list, their extensive online store offers a decor fix for any season! Find The Last Straw online at www.thelaststrawinc.com/

Hanna’s Oriental Rugs & Gifts

Welcome to Hanna’s Oriental Rugs & Gifts on Main Street. This shop is celebrating its 103rd year in business- in the same location!   James and Jane Hanna immigrated to the US near the turn of the 20th century and settled in Blowing Rock in 1917. The first shop they opened was inside the Green Park Inn, and they moved their shop to Main Street in 1919. Hanna’s has always specialized in unique finds and started as an import business that offered, among other beautiful items, hand-knotted oriental rugs. You’ll find an incredible selection of those in the shop today, along with antiques and collectibles.   The shop is run by Mrs. Hanna (James and Jane Hanna’s daughter-in-law), and her children and grandchildren are involved as well, making it a 4th-generation family business. Mrs. Hanna says there is a story behind every hand-picked item in the shop; ask her about a piece and her knowledge and appreciation of each treasure becomes immediately clear. Stop in and browse the treasure trove soon!

Christmas in Blowing Rock

Welcome to Christmas in Blowing Rock, located on Main Street. This shop is ready for Christmas year round, with beautiful gifts and ornaments, many that can be personalized! The business opened in 1993 and has been a downtown staple ever since. The current owner, Felicia Keller, started working for Milt and Sue Thompson in 2006, and she was thrilled to purchase the shop at their retirement.   Over the years, Felicia has gotten to know lots of the customers, and she has noticed that the store has become a tradition for many of them. From adding to ornament collections to commemorating a special event that year, they often return to the little shop on Main Street. Felicia feels that the consistency of the shop’s theme encourages that because people can always reminisce on and plan for Christmas there, regardless of the dizzying speed of changes at other gift shops. Plus, there’s always something new at the shop to enjoy for the coming Christmas season!   Felicia notes that while Blowing Rock has grown over the last decade or so, the small-town community feeling is still strong, and she loves being a part of it. Christmas in Blowing Rock can be found online at aPerfectPresent.com

Sharon has owned the shop for 9 years, and she loves meeting the amazing variety of people that come to Blowing Rock- often from all around the world! One of the best things about Sunset & Vine is how approachable the shop is. It’s anything but pretentious, and Sharon & her staff are excited to help people find wines to match their personal tastes and preferences. The wide selection and regular tastings & seminars make it even easier to find delicious new favorites. You might be wondering which wines a wine shop owner prefers; Sharon says her favorite changes often. Right now, because it’s warmer weather, she has been enjoying Spanish Albarinos, which she says are refreshing and a bit citrusy, with a slight saltiness that is all perfect for summer.

Art in the Park is an Outdoor Gallery

Blowing Rock’s Art in the Park offers open-air gallery experiences for art-lovers, collectors, and craft enthusiasts each year. The six-show series, which is presented once a month from May through October, sets up downtown on Park Avenue. The show is adjacent to Main Street and central shops and restaurants in Blowing Rock, creating an enjoyable stroll-and-shop experience that always features fresh art. “Artists spent a lot of time this past year in the studio creating, and I am really excited to see their new work,” said Suzy Barker, Art in the Park Director. “We had a lot of new applicants this year, too.” Some show favorites will be returning for 2021 as well, like painter Marcus Thomas and woodworker Andy Costine. Art in the Park artists are jury-selected and each show features a different set of artists, curated to present a wide variety of mediums. Find gifts and works for personal collections, functional beauties like furniture and cutlery, and wearable art like handcrafted jewelry and textiles. Attendees can meet artists and purchase art directly from creators. “My goal as Art in the Park Director is to have everyone who visits be able to walk away with their own piece of art. I think we’ve produced a well-rounded show in terms of different mediums and price points,” Suzy said. Last year, Art in the Park was modified for COVID-19 safety with fewer vendors, mask requirements, and measures to reduce crowding. This season, the show will continue to follow local and state guidelines, and will relax modifications as recommended. However, one change may be here to stay. “In 2020 we implemented one-way walking paths in the show to improve traffic flow. With patrons focused on one side of the show at a time, artists and visitors found that they had more meaningful encounters with each other. It also seemed to help artists’ sales. So we’ll be continuing that this season” Suzy said. “State guidelines may shift as the summer progresses, so please be sure to check the event webpage to confirm expectations prior to attending each show.” 2021 Art in the Park dates are May 22, June 12, July 17, August 14, September 11, and October 2. Show hours are 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Some free parking is available downtown. During show hours, a continuous free trolley service provides transportation for easy parking at Tanger Outlets. A Concert in the Park is paired with each show, presented each Sunday following Art in the Park. Blowing Rock hosts more visual arts programs throughout the summer, like Artists in Residence and the Plein Air Festival. For a complete listing of events, see the calendar on blowingrock.com Art in the Park is a Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce event. Blowing Rock Makers

Creativity at Work Blowing Rock has a history of attracting creative people who draw inspiration from the natural splendor of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Painter Elliott Daingerfield summered in Blowing Rock, and taught painting classes to ladies (quite progressive for the time) at his home, Edgewood Cottage, which still stands today. He built the Westglow mansion as his third home in Blowing Rock, which is now part of a renowned spa. Pulitzer Prize-winning artist Philip Moose made his home in Blowing Rock for over three decades, painting scenes of Grandfather Mountain and the surrounding ridges. Several more artists soon followed, making their homes in a Blowing Rock neighborhood that came to be known as Artists Alley. Some of Moose’s work is in the Permanent Collection at Blowing Rock at & History Museum. Writer Jan Karon was living in Blowing Rock when she began her beloved “At Home in Mitford” series. The first chapters were published as a serial in the town’s newspaper, The Blowing Rocket. Today, there are several galleries in town that showcase local creative works, and many of our shops specialize in handcrafted items. Some places operate as studios as well, where you can talk with the artists behind the work, and often watch them work right inside their local shops! Check out these places in Blowing Rock where you can connect with working artists: The Mountain Thread Company Katherine Lile, a fourth-generation quilter, creates works that marry the modern and the classic in her rope baskets and quilts.  The shop features her work as well as supplies for aspiring and experienced textile crafters, including American made fabrics. This shop was the force behind local makers events like the WinterCraft Handmade Market and the Made in the Mountains Quilting Event. Find the shop at 1098 Main Street, inside the Martin House. High Country Candles The Ziegler family carves hand-dipped candles into a distinctive pattern of their own, crafting unique keepsakes at their on-site studio at High Country Candles. The art stays intact as the candle is used and they look beautiful when glowing with a flame. All the candles in the shop are hand made, and the shop features lots of signature scents as well. Larry Ziegler is also a talented potter, and some of his pottery is available in the shop. Find them in the Martin House at 1098 Main Street. Gaines Kiker Silversmith/Goldsmith Gaines Kiker makes one-of-a-kind and custom jewelry and sculpture with silver and other metals. His gallery workshop is full of works-in-progress, including newer forays into large-scale wood projects and hand crafted knives. Recently his shop was full of cured cuttings the old maple trees from Memorial Park, which had to be removed due to disease. The wood is being used for benches, tables, charcuterie boards, and other pieces to memorialize the much-missed trees. Gaines seems to have no end of creativity or curiosity about a new medium. Ask him about what he’s working on- it might surprise you! The studio shop is located at 132 Morris Street in downtown. Traditions Pottery The Bolick family has been crafting traditional pottery for generations. Lula Bolick brings her family’s heritage craft from Seagrove, NC to blend with the influence of the Blue Ridge Mountains. She taught the craft to her husband, Glenn, and later to her daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Michael Calhoun. The Bolicks and Calhouns still mix their own clay in a process that comes from Lula’s family. Their gallery shop in downtown Blowing Rock holds shapes and glazes that tell the family’s history, including striking Owens Red pieces. Janet is often in the shop, and she can tell you everything you ever want to know about clays and glazes, and her family’s work. Their studio is located just outside town, where two heritage events are held each year. The old wood-fired kiln is lit for the events, in a process rarely used nowadays. Collector-worthy items from that kiln are available at both events. The shop is found at 1155 Main Street in Blowing Rock, and the studio is just 3 miles from town at 4443 Bolick Road. McCoy Minerals Art and science come together in an engaging way at McCoy Minerals. This unique destination is more than a jewelry shop. You can also find an incredible array of rare gemstones, mineral specimens, fossils. Plus, a workshop tucked into a corner where the staff cuts and sets various stones, complete with two viewing windows! You can watch them work at times, and even bring rough gems and stones to be cut for jewelry or display. They also create custom jewelry. You may know the McCoy family from their local gem-mining business, Doc’s Rocks, an education-based experience where geology is a clear passion. Randy “Doc” McCoy is a geology and lapidary expert, and he (and any member of the staff) is always happy to chat about gemstones, rocks, or fossils, and has a wealth of knowledge to share. McCoy Minerals is located at 537 Main Street. Martin House Gallery The Martin House Gallery features weekly live stream feeds of gallery-represented artists at work. Watch creators from all across the US from inside the gallery, and view some of their works on display. It’s a great way to connect with the artists and ask them about their work. They can chat about their pieces in the gallery, or their current projects. The gallery is upstairs in the Martin House at 1098 Main Street. Grounded Works Hunter Allen is a Blowing Rock native who keeps his business local. His main focus is hand-made leather work, while also offering apparel and accessories.
