Ranging from the decidedly abstract to figural studies, these examples constitute only a small cross-section of the varied strategies deployed by artists as they continue to push and shape the medium to meet the needs of their own studio practices.

Coast to Coast draws connections across impressionist painting as it was practiced on opposite sides of America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, focusing on the artists who made the journey—some permanently and some temporarily—and how the relationships that emerged between them led to a dynamic and often divergent approach to plein-air painting.
