    Reggie Harris: Music and the Underground Railroad

    Virtual Event. The Underground Railroad is one of the most important chapters in American History. This engaging concert of songs, stories and narratives about slavery and the quest for freedom reveals the hope, power and eventually, the triumph that was accomplished by a network of multicultural allies. Music and the Underground Railroad provides an understanding of the secrets and passion of this powerful era and an understanding of the use of song to communicate information during this time in American history. Part of the APPlause! K-12 Performing Arts Series.

    By Molière, translated by Bernard Sahlins. “Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme” is a 1670 work by renowned French playwright Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, better known by his stage name Molière. In “The Bourgeois Gentleman,” a new translation of the original play by Bernard Sahlins, Molière's beloved comedy features a rising member of the middle class who lusts for social status and higher learning.

    Support local non-profits and enjoy special menus at Chef's Night! Each Thursday at Storie Street Grille, sales from the Chef's Night menu will support a selected monthly non-profit. April's menu is "Tacos, Tacos, Tacos" and a portion of sales will go to W.A.M.Y Community Action to help send kids to summer camp! W.A.M.Y. (an acronym for mountain counties: Watauga, Avery, Mitchell, and Yancy) seeks to break the cycle of poverty by partnering with families and communities to provide the disadvantaged the support and tools they need to become self-sufficient.     Jim McDowell Living History Performance: “Dave: I Am a Slave”

    Join us for a special living history performance by potter, Jim McDowell, artist in residence at the Blowing Rock Art & History Museum. This performance will be a 2-act one-man show where Jim portrays enslaved potter David Drake (c.1800-1870s). Then Jim will share his personal life story growing up in D.C. during the civil rights era, his time in the Army, and life experiences, including how he became a potter. During the performance, Jim will create a face jug onstage, while at the same time instructing a volunteer from the audience who makes one with him. This performance is presented by SouthArts and is free to the public. Limited seating is available so pre-registration is highly encouraged: www.blowingrockmuseum.org/calendar/dave-the-potter
