Mountain Home Music and BRAHM present The Allen Boys Live in Concert at the Daniel Boone Native Gardens! Please bring chairs or a blanket as seating will not be guaranteed. In the event of rain, the concert will take place at BRAHM. The decision to move the concert inside will be made no later than 48 hours prior to the event. Tickets are $15 for General Admission, $10 for BRAHM & Mountain Home Music members, Children under 13. About the Allen Boys The Allen Boys are North Carolina’s only touring Sacred Steel band and ambassadors. The Allen Boys bring a high energy, dynamic foot-stomping show that’s not to be missed. They developed their love for music in Mt. Airy, NC and learned to play a variety of musical instruments at an early age. Plein Air Painting Demo: Kyle Buckland

Bass Lake US 221, Blowing Rock, NC

A live plein air painting demonstration by artist Kyle Buckland will shed light on his process in the impressionist technique of painting outdoors. Buckland is one of three artists featured in the Plein Air Masters Show at Blowing Rock Frameworks & Gallery, presented June 18-30.  Look for the full series of plein air painting demonstrations- each artist will be painting at Bass Lake during the weeks leading up to the show opening! These demos are open to anyone who would like to attend. Guests are welcome to come and go freely, anytime between 10am and noon. BRAHM: The Banjo from Africa to Appalachia

Image credit: The oldest known banjo, c. 1770-1777, from the Surinamese Creole culture. Owned by an enslaved person and collected by J. G. Stedman in the 1770s. Calabash gourd, sheepskin soundboard, wooden neck. Part of the collection at The Dutch: Nationaal Museum van Wereldculturen. The modern banjo is an instrument commonly associated with the Appalachian region and Bluegrass music, but the origins of this instrument extend beyond the rolling hills of the Southern mountains, to West Africa. The banjo has evolved over the generations from a gourd body with gut strings to a metal resonator body and steel strings like we see today. This program will be led by Mark Freed, the Director of Cultural Resources for the Town of Boone and Banjo Scholar. This will be both parts lecture and demonstration, with Freed performing tunes and techniques for each iteration of the instrument. Website

Boonerang Music & Arts Festival

This family friendly event has free admission. You can expect to find live music from over 14 bands at 4 outdoor stages, an art vendor market with over 60 vendors, 3 locations for beverages, and food, a kid zone, silent disco, and activities for all ages! On Friday, June 17 at 5:30 pm, the Jones House will kick off festivities with their Music on the Lawn series. Beer will be available for purchase. Saturday’s activities start at noon and go all day with the final concert ending around 8 pm. The party can continue from 8:30 pm into the night with a silent disco at the North Depot Street Stage, featuring three different DJ streams. With North Depot Street, South Depot Street, and part of Howard Street being closed for the festival, you’ll be able to freely walk around to the stages, food and artist vendors, and other activities with ease! The hope is for this event to be built upon for years to come! We look forward to seeing you at the inaugural Boonerang Music & Arts Festival! Crafting with the Guild: Bamboo Native American-Style Flute

Create a small bamboo Native American-style flute using hand tools which will be provided. When the flutes are finished, we will spend time learning to play. Flutes have been used by many Tribal Nations as ceremonial and healing tools, with the oldest found wooden flutes being over 7,000 years old. No prior experience is needed to make or play the flute for this workshop. Website

BRAHM: Black and Blue: African Americans and the Blue Ridge Parkway

This program will focus on the history of African Americans and the Blue Ridge Parkway, from the landowners who had to sell their land for the parkway to be built, to people that worked on the construction, segregated rest areas, all the way up to today. Our guest speakers include researcher Rebecca Branson Jones, historian Dr. Carmen Foster, and National Park Service ranger Ajena Cason Rogers. Website

Indulge your creativity while learning the ancient art of silk painting.  Joanna White takes you on an inspired adventure to design your own silk scarf masterpieces.  Perfect for both seasoned fiber artists and those newly discovering their creative self.  No previous experience necessary. Teens and adults welcome. All materials included for students to create 2 silk scarves. Silk is a living breathing fiber that reflects light and has an inner radiance that brings forth the beauty of the wearer. Silk is very strong and resilient. The silk is stretched taut on a frame and then hand painted with sumi brushes and French dyes. Website

BRAHM: John Beerman and Liza Roberts in Conversation

Join BRAHM for a conversation between artist John Beerman and author and journalist Liza Roberts. Discussing his painting practice and his works currently on view at the museum, this program will illuminate the artist's meditative painting process and his exacting approach to depicting landscapes. An exhibition of Beerman's work, Imminent Perils: To Wonder at Trifles in the Paintings of John Beerman is currently on view at the museum through July 31st, and the conversation will be followed by a Q&A with the artist in the gallery.
