Appalachian Theatre: Mary Poppins

Appalachian Theatre of the High Country 559 West King Street, Boone, NC, United States

Disney’s “Mary Poppins” is a 1964 musical fantasy based on P. L. Travers's book series of the same name. The film combines live-action and animation and stars Julie Andrews in her feature film debut as a nanny who visits a dysfunctional family in London and employs her unique brand of lifestyle to improve the family's dynamic. Dick Van Dyke, David Tomlinson, and Glynis Johns are featured in supporting roles. It received a total of 13 Academy Awards nominations, including Best Picture – a record for any film released by Walt Disney Studios – and won five, including Best Actress for Andrews, Best Original Music Score, and Best Original Song for "Chim Chim Cher-ee." The film was selected for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." The film will be screened at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 6. Website

The film will be followed by a discussion of F.A.R.M. Cafe's impact on the High Country over the past decade. We will be joined by the film's director and producer, Beth Davison as well as members of the F.A.R.M. Cafe team. A reception will follow the discussion with a cash bar and hors d'oeurves. Website

“Lady and the Tramp” is a 1955 animated musical romance film produced by Walt Disney featuring the voice of Peggy Lee, among others. It tells the story of a female American Cocker Spaniel named Lady, who lives with a refined, upper-middle-class family, and a male stray mutt called Tramp. When the two dogs meet, they embark on many romantic adventures and fall in love. It was the first animated movie to be filmed using the widescreen CinemaScope process, as well as the first animated film to be distributed by Disney’s Buena Vista division. A direct-to-video sequel, “Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp's Adventure,” was released in 2001. The film will be screened at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 13. Website

BRAHM: Shakere African Instrument Making Workshop

Adults, teens, or children accompanied by an adult We will prepare a gourd, paint or etch on the gourd, string the beaded skirt around it and learn one rhythm & song on the instrument. Beads, wooden, ceramic, and pony plastic beads will be used. Other objects like seashells may be woven in -however, if they are breakable the instrument may become more a work of art than a playable instrument.   African shekeres may use nut shells, seashells or hard seeds in the design. Bead colors are an individual choice. If participants do not complete the instrument in one session it is possible to continue to work on it at home. Website

With Blowing Rock as the epicenter for this festival, artists are invited to take advantage of the beautiful High Country setting, set up their easels, and paint “en plein air.” During the event, artists can be spotted all over Blowing Rock and the surrounding area! Painters are often happy to engage with the public and answer a few questions as they work, but be sure to consider their limited time. The festival will include artist awards and an opportunity to sell work! The public is invited to view and purchase completed art at the end-of-event Wet Paint Show and Sale.
