Alexander Hallmark (1949–2021) was an artist and longtime resident of Blowing Rock. Deeply embedded in this community, his career in the studio, though developed later in life, produced many of the works of public art that serve as visual anchors throughout this village and the wider High Country.

Maud Gatewood (1934–2004) is an exceptional figure in the art history of North Carolina and the American Southeast. A painter of exacting technique with a keen eye for composition and cultural commentary, her pictures capture the Carolinas (and the expanding world beyond) across much of the 20th Century.

Sue paints what she knows and what she sees but very much considers herself a work in progress. Sue studied Japanese and Chinese art for five years and was artist in residence for 17 years at the Morikami Japanese Museum in Delray Beach Florida.

Hat-maker Julia Gaunt will be demonstrating how she adorns her hats with flowers made from wool and ribbon. She will also demonstrate some free motion sewing techniques for writing, drawing, and coloring with thread onto fabric!

Learn to paint in a relaxed atmosphere, inspired by Paul Cézanne’s "Tulips in a Vase." Each participant goes home with a finished work of art. All materials, including canvasses, acrylic paint, brushes, and aprons, are provided. A trained instructor will lead you step-by-step.

Jen York will be demonstrating a variety of fiber techniques: shibori dyeing in Indigo; free-motion thread painting and applique for apparel and home décor; and intricate paper cutting and illustration for mixed media artworks.
Peter Werner will be demonstrating traditional Appalachian broom-tying, which is how he creates his whisks, cake testers, and large sweepers. This demonstration will be held on the front porch of the the Moses Cone Manor from 10am-4pm.
